he doesn't take the machine gun the dude was carrying. Rather he just lets it sink to the bottom of the water along with the dead dude. WHY? That didn't make any damn sense.
All the three of them had was his Walter and Honey's knife against a bunch of armed adversaries.

They were in Crab Key simply to investigate without being detected by Dr. No's patrol squad. Taking the machine gun and using it against them would mean alerting more patrol units.
