Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Dr. No

There's a scene in this film where Honey asks Bond "Have you ever lost someone you loved?" and there's a look on his face that he has but I wonder, could this be a reference to Vesper? Now obviously, Casino Royale is not in the same continuity as this film but I wonder, were the producers planning at the time to one day film Casino Royale as a prequel to Dr. No but just couldn't obtain the rights? Or is it just a reference to his parents?

It could be anyone-his parents, Vesper, one of his MANY old girlfriends, a mentor/father-figure (there's a Fleming short story which reveals that one of Bond's mentors was his ski master who was later murdered)
Bond, at the start of Dr. No, is already a veteran of the Service, and of the 00 Section, so there may have been MANY missions before, and many people he may have cared about died.

Craig's version of Casino Royale may not have happened to Connery's Bond, but perhaps Connery's character went through his own version of similar events.
He could be thinking of Vesper, or perhaps his parents.
I like to think of Bond existing in a floating timeline. Where the time period changes, but Bond's age never does. It would be funny to think of a 60s variation of the events of Casino Royale , Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall being Connery's origin story, lol

That's a very interesting way of thinking about it.

I've seen this movie many times and I can't think of when Honey asks Bond "Have you ever lost someone you loved?". In which scene is this?

I'm not sure Bond has been in the 00 section very long in DR. NO, because at this point M is still threatening to send him back to standard intelligence assignments.

That is something every 00 would have to face, though; filing reports, desk duty, etc. It would be punishment for Bond; point of fact, it's what he's stuck doing at the start of the novel
                  "Moonraker"
before M intervenes and puts him on Drax's scent.
Also, there's a bit in M's speech that everyone seemingly misses, concerning Bond's Beretta:
"No, but it jammed on your last job, and you spent six months in hospital in consequence."
This is actually in reference to something that had happened BEFORE the novel
                  "Dr. No"
                  in the previous book,
                  "From Russia with Love"
, where Bond's Beretta jams and he's stabbed by Klebb's shoe, severely poisoning him and having to spend months recovering as a consequence.
                  But, since,
                  "From Russia with Love"
                  happened AFTER
                  "Dr. No"
in the films, and Bond wasn't stabbed by Klebb at the end of it you have to wonder what exactly M's referring to, there.

Yes, the early films adhere to things written in the novels to an extent that sometimes it makes no sense! Because book From Russia With Love happens before book Dr No, and in the films , this is reversed. One wonders what job film Bond's Beretta got jammed on.
Another of these instances is the film of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which plays along with the OHMSS novel saying Blofeld and Bond have never met before. Despite Bond and Blofeld meeting on screen in the previous film You Only Live Twice .

The two are markedly different. The gun jamming reference makes no mention of what the events were, so it never actually contradicts things when "From Russia With Love" comes after.
OHMSS really messes up continuity. There's no explanation for Blofeld not recognizing Bond. The other way around was fine. Blofeld does use plastic surgery and Bond was already sure the "Count" was Blofeld, anyway.

One could just leave FRWL out of the equation and come to the conclusion that it was some other random job. Nothing nonsensical about it.
