I haven't seen the movie yet, but does anyone here have info on why it got rated 'for adults' in Germany?
Is it the animal cruelty scenes?

I don't think so. The rating is probably for the sexual content. There's no explicit sex in the movie, but it's pretty raunchy even by today's standards, I think. I can see why people would think that this is a movie 'for adults.'

I'm really surprised it got a "adults only" rating anywhere! It's no stronger than stuff you see and hear on TV nowadays. However there IS an eating sequence that shocked a lot of people back in 1963. Still I saw it on American TV back in 1980uncut! The "for adults" rating is too extreme.

          This movie was considered shocking
          in 1963.
Today I can't imagine anyone under a certain age being able to understand it. I didn't see it until I was in college after I had read the book. I think it's one of the best films ever.

Bizarre that it should be given an adult rating in Germany of all places. Have you ever seen German television? I'm not a prude and in no way disapprove, but I'm nonetheless surprised at this revelation.

Is hunting with hounds a highly controversial subject in Germany today?
I can remember being in the Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh, watching this film entranced in the 1960's. However, the woman in the row in front of me kept covering her face and weeping on the shoulder of her male escort. Some people (townies) do get awfully upset at the sight of blood sports. Out in "the sticks" where I live today, it has been a rural pastime for generations, and the Buccleuch Hunt follow the fox to this day within the Law.
