Did anybody else laugh at that line? Another movie (also directed by Sidney Lumet and also starring Henry Fonda) has a similar line; in "12 Angry Men" Fonda says "this isn't a game!"

I was wondering why the room was cheering when each Soviet plane was shot down. Surely these guys would understand the bigger picture?
I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

I thought they were cheering when the American planes were shot down - because they were understanding the big picture.

Exactly the opposite. See my other post, below.
I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Not the opposite. They specifically cheered the destruction of an American plane after the Russians were fooled by decoys for so long. The US plane was in danger of being hit by a missile, it was then hit and destroyed, then came the cheers and the scolding.

You're correct. The cheering in this scene, right before the football game comment, was in response to the Russians getting one of our planes as opposed to the decoys.

That was exactly the problem - they didn't get the bigger picture - as seen by Colonel Cascio, that Major, even the Sergeant - none of them wanted to "help". They were trained in such a way that, as Groeteschele said, communism was their mortal enemy.

I loved that line. General Bogan was a real super pragmatic straight-arrow guy who completely understood the gravity of the situation.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
