    He gives the $500 dollars or so to the family and tells them to leave.
    He knows where the gold is stored but doesn't take even take a little bit. He is owed something for that terrible beating he got.
    Instead, he simply gets on his horse and leaves the town with no appreciable amount of money on his person.
    Did I miss something?

      you missed that this was a blatnat copy of yojimbo, and thus since yojimbo didnt take any money so couldnt he.

          he acted like everything he did was for a fistful of dollars but in the end, he had other motives.
          I would say my memory is not what it used to be. But I don't remember what my memory used to be.
