I think it's the best in the Panther series.

Agreed..This movie is the best of the Pink Panther series. This film should be rated higher than it is.

I hope so because the only Sellers films I own are this and The Party. I like to think I have the best of vintage Sellars.

yes, you bet it's damn funny! The more you think of it the funnier it getsSellers is priceless as the inspector, as usual! As Dreyfus said: "Give me ten men like Clouseau and I could destroy the world."!

              The best bits:
Clouseau ripping his trousers while getting out Maria's dossier (they repeated this in 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again')
Clouseau hearing a woman singing thinking she's being screams, charges in the room straight through the window on the other side of the room.
The bed lifting off the floor when the bom goes off.
Clouseau getting out the car on the wrong side and falling in the fountain.
              Plus many more!

Actually, Clousseu spinning the globe and sliding off it occurs in the first pink panther movie. In "A Shot in the Dark", he spins the globe and gets caught in the metal ring around the middle of the globe.

right, he gets Africa all over his hand in this movie.

I love the line by Sellers: "I will prove to the world that Maria Gambrelli is innocent (pause) of murder."

I can't believe that no one mentioned (in my opinion) the funniest part of the movie. When Clouseau gets Maria to go back to his apartment. Right when he is about to go to bed with her and well. I won't give it away. It is too funny! I laughed so hard I cried! I will give you a hint (Clouseau + Maria + Cato in Clouseau's apartment). Priceless scene.

my funniest part is when Clouseau is in his office waiting for "the Gambrelli woman". He investigates several sounds in the hallway, you'll hear a suspense theme, and behind his back Hercule brings in Gambrelli in his office without him noticing it, and then he's rehearsing his conversation not knowing that she's already in the room; hilarious!

I read a review of this in Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide and rented the DVD today. I like Peter Seller's and The Pink Panther, but this movie didn't make me laugh at all. Maybe it's the later Panther films I remember being funny, because I wouldn't recommend A Shot In The Dark to anyone; it's just not funny. The plot is thin. The jokes weak.
Maltin strikes out once again with his reviews (The Shawshank Redemption getting two and a half stars, indeed).
1 out of 5 stars (just for the first Clouseau gag of him getting out of the taxi and falling into the fountain).

ive only seen a shot in the dark twice, but i enjoyed it alot. im thinking of getting the pink panther movies with peter sellers on dvd (except for trail of the pink panther, which has clips of sellers) because - how can you kill off inspector clouseau, bring him back in the curse of the pink panther and then have him completely dead in the dreadful son of the pink panther?! no, the first five films, the pink panther, a shot in the dark, the return of the pink panther (my personal favorite), the pink panther strikes again, and revenge of the pink panther are the absolute best. had edwards not tried to revive the franchise without sellers, this would have left an even bigger legacy on comedy.

It depends on what kind of humor you're looking for, I think. A SHOT IN THE DARK is not as fast-paced slapstick roughhouse style like the later PANTHER films (in my opinion), but it is better paced than the first film in the series, and gives Sellers much more opportunity to develop his Clouseau character, and to put him in to more interesting situations. It's my favorite of the series, but it is slightly different in tone than the later three with Sellers. Being based on a stage play, they opened it up enough so that it works really well as a film.

Funny? No, it's not. It's bloody hilarious!
CLOUSEAU (out of the blue): What's that you said?
                                      HERCULE: Nothing inspector.
                                      CLOUSEAU: What do you want?
                                      HERCULE: You sent for me.
CLOUSEAU (angry): Of course I sent for you!!!!
