I saw that one and wasn't William Shatner in it? It was based on the true story of an American WWII bomber that was off course over Africa. I think Life Magazine ran an article on it. The plane and the bodies of its crew weren't discovered until years afterwards. One of the men walked a fantastic distance before succumbing to thirst.

Yesyou're right. The History Channel did a one hour show about the incident. A B-24 Liberator crew who overshot their base in Libya returning from a mission over Italy and crash landed in the desert. Some of the men's bodies were found quite a distance away and a journel was found describing their ordeal.

"Sole Survivor" is correct. It was a tv movie from 1969 and starred William Shatner. It was a ghost story with a twist.
The TV movie was based on a real life event as you mention. The name of the plane was "Lady Be Good".
There was also an old "Twilight Zone" episode from the early sixties that starred Bob Cummings that also tied in to this tragedy "King Nine Will Not Return".

Not exactly like Phoenix but tense and good: Five Came Back (feature film, not tv)

                    Not a problem.
The link below is for a site that is selling "Sole Survivor" on DVD. I have not purchased a copy but I'm thinking about it.

Yes, thanks. I had come on the site to ask this same question. I too, had always believed that the name of the film I was remembering was FotP. After watching this yesterday, i, of course realized that it was not what I had remembered. Loved FotP by the way. Certainly don't remember Shatner in the Sole Survivor movie, but it was a long time ago.

The film is not called Sole Survivor. It was made in the fifties or late forties and it was in black and white. I saw a discussion about this on a Guardian message board and no answers there either though someone claimed it was called Catch 22 which is absurd as that phrase meant nothing until Joseph Heller wrote the book which was published in 1961 after the movie was made. Even if the movie was made after why name it after a book and then tell a story that has nothing to do with the book?
To solve this mystery every copy of the Radio Times between 1980-89 would have to be scrutinized as I'm almost certain I saw it in that decade on BBC 1 or 2. It was on in the afternoon because I remember watching it with my mother so that narrows it down a bit.

There's a very similar film called "The Lost Patrol". It's set during WW1 where 12 British soldiers are lost in the Mesopotomian desert.
