Does anyone know? I've seen it on ebay. But haven't found a retailer here in the U.S. Why is this DVD so expensive and hard to get? This is a MUST for me, as it is one of McQueen's best performances.

I've noticed the same thing. You can't find it at traditional retailers. Amazon.com gives you links to some stores they have an affilition with, but it is not available directly from Amazon.
I'm sure some investigation would turn up an answer, but my guess is that the DVD is for sale overseas (but not in America) due to some argument over who is going to be paid what. The copies we see for sale probably were made for foriegn markets, and as you say, they are pretty expensive.
It's a real shame that you just can't stroll into Best Buy and pick this one up. For a while in the 1960's just about everything that Robert Wise touched was gold. For me, this is definitive McQueen, and the actors around him are wonderful as well.
I've caught it recently on cable (I think it was on Bravo), but this movie just cries out for a "special edition" with lots of interviews, cut scenes, etc.

You won't believe this, but I found it at a Wal-mart about a year ago. Hell,
        I
didn't believe it myself. Cost me less than my VHS copy. Go figure.
        Have you tried Amazon?

I find that almost impossible to believe. I have looked for it in many Wal Marts and other stores in many states and never seen it for sale. If you found it that cheap you should have bought all they had because they are going for 30 to 50 dollars and more on Ebay right now. Amazon has it but it is from third party sellers for around $75.

            Holy cow!
I guess I should have! I was in a Wally's just looking around when I ran into a cardboard display with all kinds of war movies. They had 'The Blue Max', 'The Great Escape', 'Sandpebbles' and I don't recall what else. I paid 25 USD for my old vhs copies, and less than fifteen for this. I got lucky I guess. We were traveling (in state) and the car needed a quart of oil.

I guess you could have because I have seen and bought movies at Wal-Mart that were hard to find or way more expensive somewhere else. And I do remember them having a lot of war movies about 2 or 3 years ago that I have never seen since. About 2 years ago I saw the Ray Milland movie "X The Man With the X-ray Eyes" in a bin for about $3 but didn't buy it. I came home and looked for it online and when I did find it the price was at least $15. I went back the next day and of course it was gone. This year I bought "Them" with James Whitmore and James Arness for $3.44 and the double feature "Village of the Damned and the Children of the Damned" for $3.44. These go for at least $10 at Amazon. I even bought "The Midnight Cowboy" VHS at Big Lots for ONE DOLLAR! . That movie was one of the last non porno X rated movies. Go figure. Sometimes they get stuff only one time so if you see it you better get it. Hell I may have even seen the "Sand Pebbles" myself and just forgot. I wont make the same mistake again if I see it. Cheers!

At the very least I've seen "The Sand Pebbles" in HMV, in Toronto. You'll probably get lucky some day in the 'War' section of Circuit City or Best Buy I wager.
