What does "Far from the Madding Crowd" mean in relation to the story?

It's from a Thomas Gray poem
Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,
Their sober wishes never learned to stray;
Along the cool sequestered vale of life
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.
The madding crowd is the city people. Gray portrays country life as sober and noiseless, but Hardy begs to differ.
