what was sheep ailment that was cured by puncture?

I figure that the accidental poisoning of the sheep is real enough (though it was the height of idiocy to have such a crop adjacent to a sheep penfences always eventually fail), but what ailment would be so easily fixed by a stabbing puncture to the abdomen followed by the leaking of a considerable quantity of air?
I can see eating something developing a gas that would cause a problem in breathing and heart pumping from being pressured, but then the cutting puncture would penetrate the gastrointestinal tract, and that would be another big problem less easily solved.
Any veterinarians reading here?
