Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Devil's Brigade

This past rememberance day, my unit was marching in the parade (I wasnt because I dont have DEU's issued to me) However one of my Sergeants was tending to a Vetern of the Second World War, who was also in The Devils Brigade. I was unable to introduce me self as he was kept busy and I had to leave early. But just to be in his presence, it was something else I tell you.

My grandfather was a member of the devils brigade and was a consultant on the movie. I watched the movie with him a long long time ago and he said "when we got to the top of the cliff, the enemy just dropped there weapons they had no idea how the devils got there."

they really are an awesome bunch of guys. I met a few of the canadian ones a few years ago, my history group depicts them in historical re-enacting and they were the best; showed us how they laced their boots, rigged their gear etc. at that point I was sure many of them still could have pounded a man flat

Basically he said the Germans would send their screw-ups to get captured, thinking that they would be returned to the Allied lines with a US soldier escorting them. The Germans would have a sniper to pick off the soldier so the Germans could get captured again and another soldier sent to be picked off. This FSSF member said he told the young LT. that he wasn't taking any prisoners back so he could get shot. He said if they were of any value they wouldn't have been captured so easily. He told the LT. this was the best way to handle these types of prisoners. The FSSF member told the German prisoners to run and he mowed them down with his SMG. I guess a short time later from what he told me, the Germans stopped sending their screw-ups because the plan wasn't working anymore.
I believe the story because from what I have read and heard, the FSSF didn't take prisoners unless ordered. The scen where Cliff Robertson was shot by surrending German's really did happen to an officer (Not neccessarily that Canadian CO) so the force from then on refused to take prisoners unless otherwise ordered to. That's why they were referred to as the Black devils or the Devils Brigade. The would leave their cards saying the worst was yet to come on dead German corpses.
