I don't agree that she herself was creepy. But the "love scene" was kinda shot to make her look creepy. Thats why we need a remake. Because Mercy looked like the witch on Sleeping Beauty. She looked menacing, when she clearly enjoyed it. But it was shot in the 1960s so they couldnt make it more warm. Rewatch it and look at the shadows they placed on her face and how pale she looked, it was shot to look kinda creepy.
But if we had a remake and cast Demi Moore as Mercy, it would be totally beliveable. Bosses do steal spouses. -

Did you mean to reply to the original poster? Because my comment was aimed at the ridiculous assertion of the original poster which was "That woman is the epitome of a creepy catty straight woman. No way she's gay." Yawn
Ayway, why would they make it warm? As Aldrich described her in that scene (aesthetically) she supposed to a "Dracula-style heavy." A warm and fuzzy scene wouldn't fit the picture no matter when it was shot.
And it absolutely does not need to be remade. -

I do not agree with the re-making of this film, i hope it will never be considered for a remake. It is fine as it is. And besides show me any re-made films that are actually good.
Anyhoo regarding Mercy, i have read other peoples posts and i have to say i never found Mercy creepy at all. BUT i do think the sex scene at the end was made to look sort of sinister. The music was a little bit eery.
I thought the part where they were kissing and Childie pushes mercys head towards her breast for me hinted that Mercy had no experience of any sort of lesbian sexual encounter.
Oh! If they are foolish enough to make a re-make, then i think carolyn Seymour would make a brilliant Mercy Croft. -

Instead of a remake, I'd rather see a contemporary film that explores these issues seriously and not just for the sake of the T&A-obsessed demographic. The closest thing I can think of recently is "Notes on a Scandal."

Mercy seems anxious to state he was once married to a man when we first meet her. My take on her was she was in denial of herself, deeply clossetted but confused by her attraction to Childie. It would explain her contradictory facial reactions in the club. It is possible that her love scene with Childie was her first time.

Good point. She does go out of her way to distance herself from the lesbians, but at the same time she's very curious about this exotic world she's probably only dreamed of. It's quite possible Childie was her first experience with a woman because it seemed very awkward for her.

Her disgusted facial expressions in the club could be slight envy that these women are so open and free about their sexuality whereas she has to cover it up. She mentions her marriage in her first scene but we know how many marriages in show biz are "of convenience" for a lavender cover-up.

Regardless of whether she was lesbian, she would be shocked by what she saw openly expressed in the club because seeing other women so comfortable with themselves reminded her of how uncomfortable she was. What is liberating to some is threatening to others. And this was the era when women (and men) were expected to get married. Not much was said about the love that dare not speak its name.

I am very much against remakes, but the one film that always springs to mind, when I feel there is justification for a remake is 'The Killing of Sister George'.
This 1968 version was very explicit for the time, but it still skirts around subjects due to the era it was filmed in. If the picture was remade, I really do think they would be able to tell more. To be honest, it would even make a good TV series. This would enable them to build everything up for further.
