This has been one of my favorite films since I first saw it.
Love the plot, the contrast between Steiger's wonderful over-the-top acting and his subtle "theatrical" characterization.
George Segal does a great job as the bumbling cop, sharing with Steiger's character the overwhelming presence of a mother figure.
But I'm surprised no one mentioned the beautiful Lee Remick!
Perfect as the "gentile" counterpart to Segal's Jewish cop, she's as gorgeous as ever and perfectly (WASPily?) understated in her attraction for Segal's character.
Wish this film would be show more often on TCM!

I will mention Lee Remick! She's one of my all-time top favorites, and I love her in this movie. Love the whole movie.
Ms. Remick is gorgeous, as always, and sexy, and plays her role as a gorgeous, sexy, sophisticated New York woman of the late 1960s just perfectly! She and George Segal are a very cute couple here too.
One of my favorite Rod Steiger roles/performances. And Michael Dunn is such a treat. When he throws that chalk at Morris, no matter how many times I've seen it, I just crack up.

I would not think of Segal's character as Bumbling!Steiger was too intelligent that's all.

Her scene with Mo's mom is spectacular.

Lee Remick was one of a kind.
Her devastating looks really do mask her great acting. She was terrific.
I ran into her once in an ice cream shop in Los Angeles. She was wearing shorts. Her beauty was breathtaking. Those blue eyes are just as dazzling in person as you may imagine. She was well over 40 and her legs looked a 20 year old. She was too too beautiful to be believed.
I spoke to her briefly and mentioned I was going to UCLA school and was a big fan. Told her we had studied "A Face In the Crowd" and "Wild River" in a class on Elia Kazan, and I also greatly admired her work in "Days of Wine and Roses". She thanked me and was very sweet of course, asked what I wanted to do in movies after I graduated.
