Does anyone know how successful "The Party" was at the box office in the US back in 1968? I'm just curious to know if it was considered a hit when it was new.

Gross was NOT $2.9 million. The rental figure was $2.9 million, that's the figure the studio receives from the gross. Rental figure varies between 40 to 50% of gross.
If $2.9 million was 50%, then the gross was $5.8 million.
If $2.9 million was 40%, then the gross was $7.25 million.
So, the median between the two amounts is $6,525,000 (if rental figure is 45% of gross).
So, given its $1.5 million budget, the film was commercially successful.
