The drunk waiter gag is a blatant steal from Freddie Frinton's 'Dinner For One' act, which is now shown every New Year's Eve in German-speaking countries and also on the SBS in Australia. Cheers, Steve

Its not a "steal", but the actor who played the waiter based the character on Dinner For One. He has said this many many times, and i would never call having an inspiration stealing.
I actually think doing it created an even more genius film. -

OK, maybe that was a bit harsh but there's a fine line between tribute and plagiarism. I didn't know that Freddie Frinton's act had been acknowledged as inspiration by that particular actor. Cheers, Steve

How could the actor claim to base the character on Dinner for One when Blake Edwards wrote the screenplay?
