      What makes you think that it 'criticizes America'? Please elaborate.
      To me, it
      satirizes
      a certain slice of American culture. No more than that.

            It doesn't criticize America as much as it criticizes the inner workings of the entertainment industry (as symbolized by the director and the creepy and predatory agent) and the stuffy and hypocritical ways of certain segments of the upper classes, contrasted with the supposedly more liberating ways of American 60s counterculture.
