The writers attempt to cover that by the characters saying that the nights are blanketed by cloud, which would hide the night time moon. Of course, in the real world the moon can be seen during the daytime, etc, so that doesn't exactly cover it in a nitpicking manner. However, the story's logic tries to deal with that with the night cloud point.

I always thought the moon was destroyed in the nuclear war.

If the moon was destroyed, we would all drown as the oceans would engulf much of the land across the globe

And lots of planets have moons I mean, would you really think that you were back on Earth?

The face of our moon is pretty distinct. I'd be as surprised to see the familiar man in the moon orbiting another world as I would be to see, well, the statue of liberty

The "cloud cover at night" and "strange luminosity but no moon" was a plot device so the astronauts wouldn't be able to recognize the planet as Earth.

They wouldn't know there was no moon until night without instruments would they? I get Taylor had better things to do and maybe while captured he was never let out at night. Why would the moon get destroyed in a war unless it was War of the Worlds maybe.
I guess given the current date alot could have happened randomly in space like a meteor striking the moon which would mess with our oceans as others have mentioned. Maybe that why the SOL was cut down so far and the NY area was a wasteland
                  .

Taylor "told" Cornelius and Zira it had taken them "many days and nights" to reach the jungle. So presumably they'd experienced darkness before they made the comment.

Wasn't The "no moon" comment made when they first got out of the raft and were taking inventory of their supplies prior to the flag ceremony in the middle of the day.

No way, manthe moon comment was made when they were deep inside the desert, implying they'd already experienced nightfall.
There wasn't a lot of conversation between reaching the shore and Taylor laughing at the flag.

Sorry but you're dead wrong. The 'no moon' comment was made later in the film after the scene with the falling rocks.

It is mentioned after the falling rocks.
I don't have the DVD, but just saw it on TCM for the first time in ages. Knowing how it ends the no moon comment caught my attention. If you have the DVD check out what is said when they first get out of the raft. Maybe I'm wrong.

I checked the script its said after the rock slide, but isn't that still before they have spent a night? That was really my main point that it was said after they landed but before they spent a night as all we see between the landing and the no moon statement is daylight so how would they know no moon without instruments?

They also didn't recognize the stars above them . One of them said , " It's too bright to be Baltar". That's odd they wouldn't recognize the constellations - they wouldn't change. Maybe the earth got knocked into another solar system?
