Polanski did wonders with the creepy atmosphere. The film is basically psychological horror paranoia which is also a very black comedy. No, it is not the most disturbing film ever made, though it would spook some.

There was so much drama behind the screen -
Mia Farrow leaving Peyton Place in dramatic manner, her short haircut,
Frank Sinatra physically abusing her for naked scenes in this movie,
tragedy of Polanski the following year… -

And we need to look at her nude scenes from the historical perspective.
Sex revolution was just started, this was all new and shocking for many people.
Before this movie she starred in beloved soap opera on national TV, worshipped and watched by millions as American sweetheart in age where nudity was not allowed. -

so nudity in big movies wasn't a thing until the late '60s at the earliest.
it just wasn't around there just wasn't any nudity in big movies in the early or mid '60s. so weird to think of that time how you just couldn't look at boobs in almost anything.
such a conservative time they were in.

It has its value.
We have seen that sexual revolution brought the rise in crime and drugs and violence, too.
People in general behave orderly when they are being punished and disciplined - most people do not have inner police to do be consistent enough to do that.
This is why Russia and North Korea have low crime - but the price to pay is lobotomy and castration.
Back then - the last time humans were exposed to pornography was in ancient Greece and Rome and India with Kama Sutra. For 2000 years - anything nude was scorned upon and passed on from previous generation.
Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't.
