'Its not the baby's problem (nor anyone else who has to breathe in that noxious garbage's smoke) if the mother can't or won't quit cigarettes.
If you have an addiction, either quit before conception or don't have a baby at all.
Choices & free will. We all have them.'
You're a naive judgemental uninformed arrogant person. It must be your 'choice' to be that way.
You haven't a clue about choices and free will, as you run your goody-2 shoes mouth off about your little ideal arrogant preceived notions. But let the lecturing began like a new-age know it-all. You do more damage to your baby every time you gobble down whatever you do while you're lonely at 2:00 in the morning. The world need not bend for you.
    You're done.

How is it expected for a mother to give up an addiction just like that?
Then don't get pregnant! You don't magically get pregnant; you can certainly decide to quit smoking long before conceiving.

Um, the same way she decided to get pregnant!
If you actually care about your baby, you quit BEFORE you get pregnant.
Or don't have a child. easy enough.
Its not about the mother anymore, its about the CHILD.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

You're just as likely to be affected from auto emissions, than second-hand smoke
Finally! An answer which doesn't reflect the modern righteous smug hysteria concerning cigarettes. But don't ask these geniuses to cut down on their automobiling which is killing the dag nab planet!

I can't believe how brainwashed Americans are about smoking, drinking, etc. but it really stands out when watching a pre-hippie era film.
It wasn't the smoking, alcohol, etc. that turned Rosemary's Baby into Satan's bratit was the herbs and vitamin drinks and healthy cakes that made the baby evil.
It was the Health Food that did it!
And now, take a moment to think about what exactly all this health demagoguery is doing to you!

In the book, she doesn't drink alcohol after the celebration. At the party, she has ginger ale.

Actually, she does drink but very lightly at the party. She drinks ginger ale after the alcoholic drink she is sipping makes the 'pain' worse.

I used to smoke, hence the screen name, and during my 1st pregnancy, 25 yrs ago, my dr said it was ok, as long as I cut back. He said smoking lowered birth weight a little and made delivery easier. This used to be accepted advice, (believe it or not), back when c sections weren't so common. My daughter weighed a little over 6 lbs, but quickly caught up and was a high school/college athlete and dancer.the healthiest and most fit person I know. 13 yrs later, (so older and wiser), I quit smoking before getting pregnant with my 2nd daughter. She was a little shorter and weighed a little more, but like her sister, is as healthy as a horse. But, the main reason women used to smoke during pregnancy, (even deliberately picking up the habit), was to lower birth weight.

Many children were born around smokers and drinkers and have no adverse effects.
Just a political lie made up to cause contreversay in the medical insurance field and being able to raise taxes on these items as "vice" taxes. Today's sissified society buys into all the crap and makes things difficult for everyone else.

Well, later on at the party Guy says "careful of the booze" and she says "it's only ginger ale." So it's not like she was taking a bath in the stuff. She probably just had a sip or two.

Did you not pay attention?? HELLO! It was 1965-66 and at that time it was unheard of about the dangers of smoking and drinking while pregnant. If you know this then your post is irrelevant.

I think it should have been common sense, even then, that drinking heavily or smoking would be very bad for Baby!
But that aside, they did know
                                  something
about it back then. Although not how serious it can be, no doubt.
I say this because in the novel Ro thinks to herself, about herself:
She'd give up her occasional cigarette, of course. And check with Dr. Saperstein about cocktails.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

I know, in the book one of Rosemary's friends gives a known pregnant Rosemary a scotch but watered down since she's pregnanthilarious. I remember dentists smoked right by the chair and didn't use gloves, they'd literally drag on their cigarette and then put their hands in your mouth. And hotel chefs would smoke in the kitchens and then mix the giant salads with their bare hands. This was normal back then. Cripes

I enjoyed this passage in Levin's novel too.
I can't remember the exact phrasing, but it mentioned that Rosemary would cut out her occasional cigarette and 'ask the doctor' about cocktails.
Aaahhh, ignorance is bliss! I find it amusing thinking of a time when cigarettes and cocktails were so central a part of life.
Another favourite along these lines is in Arlo Guthrie's film Alice's Restaurant. He goes to see his father who is terminal in hospital as Huntington's disease slowly kills him. His wife lights up a cigarette and takes it from her own mouth and puts it in the old man's. And he's lying there in a hospital bed, immobile. It really does make me chuckle.
