It was on dvd, but Paramount let it go out of print. Maybe it's getting a 40th anniversary edition in 2009, because i don't see any other reason why they would let a historically important film like this in their library go out of print. But then again, Paramount is and always been the most clueless and idiotic company when it comes to DVDs.

The Criterion Collection did a great release of this film.
