Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Medium Cool

    ctzalman — 23 years ago(February 24, 2003 08:02 PM)

Does anyone out there know the name of the artist(s), besides the Mothers of Invention songs, which appears in the film Medium Cool? Most particulairly, I was wanting to know the artist and song played during the scene in which Harold takes a shower at John's house. Some kind of harmonica in the song, then in the next scene when Harold is combing his hair, there is a song with a swirling organ. Does anybody know who is preforming these songs?
    Thanks

The harmonica is almost certainly Paul Butterfield. I ended up seeing this film by crossindexing his name here at IMDB. Now I'm curious, so will try to locate the video of this movie.

wow, finally a reply. I looked at the soundtrack listing, and it does include Paul Butterfield, but when I checked out the PB CDs released pre-1969, I didn't hear the song from Medium Cool. If you can track down the name/album that those songs appear on, I'd greatly appreciate it.

          I have a similar question:
Does anyone know the song that plays when John C. and the soundman are at the pool? The song plays again a little while later when he's in the parking lot. It's a brief, sparse guitar riff with no vocals. I feel like I must have heard it before, but I don't think it's one of the Mothers of Invention songs.

The instrumental song that's playing during the opening credits, and a few other times in the movie, is by a band called Love. It's called Emotions.
It's on their first ( self-titled ) album that came out in 1966. Amazon has it for more than twenty bucks. There are a few Love compilations, but that's the only album I know of that song being on. The albums good though, probably worth the money.
Their other albums are good too. They're my favorite hippie band.

"Emotions" was written by Love guitarist Johnny Echols, while he was in high school. He originally called it "Lonely Guitar". Elektra Records changed it to "Emotions". Johnny said he disliked that name, and would rather they had called it "Elektra Knows Best". This information from a Love discussion forum.

The music by Love reminds me of Reel Ten by The Plugz, used in Repo Man (1984)
