I watched this film years ago, and watched it again last night. It is an amazing film. the story, the acting, direction, cinematography, etc., way ahead of its time, but I'd forgotten what a downer it is. . .so depressing.
Voight and Hoffman were deserving of every award possible. -

I don't find it depressing. There is a lot humor through out in the film and the ending seems hopeful for Joe. Ratso's end is more of a relief than a downer, since he is no longer suffering and at peace.

I agree - so depressing. So much desperation, and New York City is just grimy and icky (and I
love
New York City). I find it unrelenting, really, with very little humor, but it's a film I can watch many times. -

I just sat through it for the first time. It's depressing all right, and Voight's and Hoffman's performances are terrific. But on the whole the film didn't strike me as being worthy of a Best Picture Oscar. It's dated, of course. But it doesn't tell the two men's story that well in any case.
I looked up Roger Evert's review. I can make up my own mind, but Midnight Cowboy is kind of legendary and I felt maybe I had missed something. Now I don't. -

I just watched it the first time and it was beautiful but oh so bloody sad. I was not expecting a fairytale ending but damn. I have been homeless and stayed in beep places and this movie just brought me right back to that feeling desparity, hunger, and being so damn friggin damn cold.

Honestly, put the ending aside, I don't think it's so depressing. It has many funny moments and joyful moments, the music is uplifting and the tone is generally quite joyful. There are some darker and sadder moments, but I don't feel like they dominate the movie overall.
