Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Midnight Cowboy

The entire premise of the movie was that Joe Buck went to New York City to get rich by having sex with rich older women or in the case of Shirley younger rich women too, but Joe Buck seems like the type of Hustler/Stud that would take money from any woman that was willing to pay him money in exchange for sex.
So how many women on this board would accept his advances and pay him money for sex if Joe Buck came up to them and put the moves on them? Remember the only thing that he was ever good for was loving, so you might get your monies worth, John Voight as Joe seemed like a hot item in the movie and was in great shape too, so what would ladies here do if the character approached them?
This applies for gay men too, i am certain that Joe would take as low as ten bucks and as high as anyone wanted to pay him.
This thread is just to see how appealing Joe would be with real life men and women, especially considering how he was such a nice guy in the movie and not a douche like some characters are, so a lot of women might have loved the guy and payed him money for sex, he just didnt know where the loose women were located in New York, so Ratso sold him short on this by not telling him.

He was a good looking man and seemed nice too - he certainly cared for Ratso. However, I would never pay for sex.. Maybe it was different in those days but you have to wonder what kinds of diseases he could have if he's sleeping around and he wasn't exactly well groomed (although he obviously made an effort before going 'out to work'). Seemed like he must have been pretty good if he got recommendations. I hope after the film he made good on his statement that he'd look for a proper job

They had diseases in those days also. I think it's more a matter of self-respect with some people, feeling that they should not feel desperate that they have to hire someone.
I don't get why posters are saying Joe was deluded (he just needed a shirt and tie) The man Ratso ripped off the card from was for a woman who was hiring. Or was that male-escort really an escort by definition, meaning no sex.

The point was that practically NO women wanted to pay for sex with him. The only person who didn't know that was Joe. He was naive & self-deluded.

I don't know, except that men are a lot more likely to pay for sex than women.

Women are alot more likely to sell their bodies for sex than men.

In the universe of the movie, nope, no way. Joe's cute as hell, but he's still a guy on the street asking for money for sex. That sets off the kind of 'danger' alarm in my head that I couldn't ignore.
Outside of the context of the movie? Like, if someone brought Joe to life in front of me and offered him to me for cash? Or if someone time traveled a young Jon Voigt to me and offered him up? um
Hell, I never had much self respect anyway. 🙂

Not many, and this was one of the bullet points of the movie. Joe Buck's "business plans" were mere naive reveries and he went down in flames quickly. This concept is the entire essence of the movie.
