Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Wuthering Heights

I remember well in 1970 that Genevieve Bujold, fresh from her triumphs as Anne Boleyn in ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS, was offered the part of Cathy Earnshaw by American International Studios. She was the first choice, but she was nervous about her English (she was coached a great deal in ANNE and ACT OF THE HEART to overcome her Quebecois accent. She also had some scruples about the script. Susan Hampshire (THE FORSYTH SAGA on PBS)was the second choice, but opted instead for a part in DAVID COPPERFIELD. When both high-profile actresses turned down the part, it was only then offered to Emmy winner Anna Calder-Marshall.

Really??? Wow. That's such a shame, Genevieve would have been an amazing Cathy, the part would have suited her well. Sadly, yes i think there were some problems with the script in this adaptaion, which is a shame because Wuthering Heights adapted well would be a masterpiece. I don't really see Cathy in Susan Hampshire, so i'm glad Anna got the part instead of her. Ahh, i would have loved to have seen Genevieve as Cathy. On a purely shallow level her and Timothy Dolton would have lookeed beautiful together. Thanks for the info. How did you know that anyway???

Sorryhaven't checked back here for a while. I read it in a "Hollywood News" column in the DES MOINES TRIBUNE in December of 1969, and there was a brief notice in THE NEW YORK TIMES about a month later.

          That's a shame.
She didn't take the role, I just yesterday watched her In Anne of the Thousand days and she was wonderful and coincidentally I just finished this version of WH which is my third and the one I've liked thee least.
I have one theory if you make a great Anne Boleyn you make a great Cathy as well since both woman are very similar.
Merle Obreron proved so since she has played both and as far as I know she was very good in those parts.
Natalie Portman who played Anne In the Other Boleyn Girl was attached to the 2011 version of Wuthering a heights but she latter dropped off with no one knowing why since rumor has it she stalked the director till he casted het.
Anyway that version ended up with another director with a whole different and more artsy idea Casting two unknown actors
James Howson as Heathcliff and Kaya Scodelario as Cathy.
But see how many of the actresses who play Anne Boleyn latter get attached to play Cathy. ?
