Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Zabriskie Point

    phantomhillbilly — 21 years ago(July 21, 2004 06:34 PM)

Over the last fifteen years I keep seeing references that Harrison Ford (that is the Harrison Ford of modern times who played in "Blade Runner" and "Patriot Games" etc. as opposed to another actor by that name who starred in movies from the 1940's) is in "Zabriskie Point". Leonard Malten says it's so in his books, and right here on imdb.com under Harrison Ford's filmography and on the Zabriskie Point posting they claim that a young Harrison Ford plays an uncredited roll as an airport worker. Now I OWN "Zabriskie Point" and have combed the airport scene for somebody who looks like a nineteen to twenty year old Harrison Ford and I can't see him. He is certainly not the man who runs across the runway and accosts Mark Frechette as he is stealing the airplane. The best bet is a man in the control tower who frantically yells "Abort your take off! Abort your take off!" as Mr. Frechette's plane races down the runway, but seriously, even though this actor has his back mostly turned to the camera, it doesn't really look like a young Mr. Ford nor does it sound like him. Can anybody clear this mystery up? Obviously somebody put him down as being in the cast and that somebody must know something. But is it really Han Solo Harrison Ford or perhaps somebody else with the same name? Either way his name certainly doesn't appear in the credit sequence but then neither does half of the speaking parts in this movie.

The trivia section of the imdb "Zabriskie Point" posting on him says that the main scene with him in it was cut and that he can only be spotted in the jail scene up against the wall. I have the Letterbox version of the movie and I still don't see him. If he's there it's a fraction of a blink. I guess I'll just wait for the DVD with the outtakes and Director's cut (Yeah Right!).

He's in the opening sequence at the meeting. He's got a beard.

Alright I'm gonna watch it tonight and check. I'll even watch the wide screen version just to make sure.
                Thanks!
What an excellent day for an exorcism.

He actually auditioned for the lead role, but didn't get it.

Really? Wow! He would have been terrific in the lead roll, the part would have been a lot less wooden sounding and Antonioni still would have gotten his wish of having an unknown lead (at the time). Interesting, because presumably his character's name would have been Harrison or Harry then b/c Antonioni just had the main characters known by their real names. And I still can't spot him anywhere in the movie even as an extra. Not in the opening sequence, not in the jail sequence. I'm going to have to assume his footage was actually left on the editing room floor.

I can't spot him either, though there's a guy with a beard in the opening credits right after "Executive Producer Harrison Starr" (ironically, his name is Harrison also) who looks vaguely like him. You can also see him when the students are talking about the revolution. I still don't think it's him, though. Harrison had a bit part in "Luv" three years before this film, and it's unmistakably him. In this film, I'm not so sure if he's in the version I saw.
And I agree that Harrison would be superb in Mark Frechette's role. Mark's extremely awkward performance dragged this film down considerably, in my book.
Can anyone link to a still of Harrison Ford in this film?
