I'm sure Gloria being a girl had a lot to do with it. He lectured Edith more than once that a bratty kid should be hit, but he would've left Gloria's physical punishment to Edith, but you get the idea she never layed a hand on her. Judging from Gloria's behavior in season one, you get the impression she didn't cause too much trouble as a child.
If they had a son, that's when you would've seen Archie in punishment mode.

I was becoming aggravated just reading that. I'd be bitching at the mother, but that's just me.
Government handouts are a possibility, but so is a hefty child support arrangement. That's one reason I'd be terrified of marriage (I'm 54 and single).

I took it that Stephanie had a more defiant nature than Gloria had at that age, so Archie might not have had the incentive to go after Gloria as he had with Stephanie.

Some women are too manipulative, knowing they can end a marriage and continue to live off of the husband if there are kids in the picture.
I have a niece who supposedly became pregnant in High School only so she wouldn't have to go anymore. She pretty much gave up the kid early on, ending up being raised by the father (and his parents).
