The episode where the guy breaks into their house and tries to rape Edith (On her birthday I think??) Is so hard to watch/ extremely disturbing. I remember I was looking for something to watch one night when I was a kid and stopped on AITF for a laugh and boy did I not get it.
I wonder if there was controversy over it at the time for dealing with such a heavy subject so openly? Still gives me shivers thinking about it. -

Can you just imagine what would have happened if Edith, or even Gloria who was also a victim of attempted rape, had actually been raped?
Because they are beloved TV sitcom characters, they will have happy endings.
I think there would have been even more uproar that would have taken over the death of Col. Henry Blake on MASH.
Funny thing is that later on Sally (Gloria) Struthers would then go on to star in a TV movie called "A Gun in the House" where she was once again an attempted rape victim.

I think it would have been far, far worse. The latter was shocking, but didn't affect the show's vibe during the later seasons. Though not in that same way, characters had been killed off before on television. Edith or Gloria raped, however, would have created a black cloud that would have stayed with the show until its end (which may have been years earlier).
No blah, blah, blah!
