Hi,
I have had no response to my frequent emails to GE and Universal re whether and why they don't release the rest of the show on DVD. I bought Season 1 and it was crystal clear. But the DVD had a lot of quality porblems that were resolved when they sent me a new one.
Does anyone know whether the Season 1 they released was a bomb and that's why the rest of the show has not been released OR is it bigotry against Rock Hudson?
Universal made a FORTUNE of off this show and now they don't want to seem to admit that the man ever even lived or that the show ever was produced. -

I think the key reason why both "McMillan And Wife" and "McCloud" the two other big legs of the NBC Mystery Movie only got one DVD release can be summed up in a single term: DVD-18 discs. They had the misfortune to come out at a time when Universal was releasing all of their vintage shows in this misguided format of double-sided, double-layered discs that had an enormously high failure rate on many brands of machines that often, the customer would have to keep exchanging it to get a set that worked fine on their machine. Universal has since come to their senses and abandoned this stupidity in favor of single-sided discs, but the damage alas was done.

Wait - are you saying there's a probability that further releases won't happen because of brainlessness in the quality control department at Universal?
I mean, nothing would surprise me less, for that bunch of boneheads to kill their own gravy train because of a mistake they made to begin with. -

I think it's a reason why Universal won't release any more seasons themselves. Universal has demonstrated that when they abandon a title they seldom go back to it unless there's an outside reason (like "Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew" getting a second season release only because of the Nancy Drew movie). That said, Universal is usually amenable to licensing a title out to another label, so there is hope that more releases will come that way. But don't count on it coming from Universal.

Well what a fiasco! The region 2 release of season 1 is a 3 disc set so there have been no problems with the discs in the UK but how could Universal be so careless with the region 1 release? I'd have thought there was a sizeable audience keen to buy this show on DVD because-in the UK at least-it is rarely seen on TV but no wonder interest died down if there were numerous problems with the double-sided r1 discs. Just have to hope that-as you say-another label is interested in picking up the rights because-providing there are no technical problems-there is definitely an audience for this show.

And as I predicted, another label will be picking up the show on DVD at long last. VEI will be releasing S2 in Canada (which is a R1 release compatible with US players) on August 24 and a US release will come later this year. So the show is at last after five years rescued from the "one and done" category!

The VEI release of Season 2 is apparently out of print already, I was lucky enough to get one before it sold out. If anyone at VEI is reading this, any chance of printing more of them, and when is Season 3 going to be released?
