I can get it where he feels the need to sit and rest and collect himself from being overwhelmed and such an adrenaline rush.
It looks like the cliff the car and truck go over was on the edge of private property seeing how there was a fence and gate there.
Probably really big ranch land.
He could wander on that until he found a house.
He was in or near a desert or with very little civilization around.
I guess he would have to find help from a passing motorist on the road.
If this was made today or remade it would turn out the driver helping him is a crazy brother of the truck driver and David would be doomed!
If he gets back he will have some serious splaining to do to the wife!

I'm going with he eventually found his way to the main road and walked down it until he was either picked up by a motorist or made his way to the nearest town. Without his car this is the only feasible course of action left for him to do.

Maybe a sympathetic motorist who gave David a lift at least stopped off at a roadside diner to buy him a cup of coffee. That's better than nothing.
