Caine is very good in this role as he is in nearly everything he does. However he is morally rotten. He certainly had cause in the film to be angry since his brother was killed by the criminals. But why take it out on the women. They really didn't have anything to do with it. They were just cogs in the criminal enterprizes' wheels. Particularly awful was the hooker who was locked in the trunk of the car which ended up in the bay. Likewize the party girl whom Caine injects with dope of some kind, killing her. Way over the top. Good movie, however.

best_of: Glenda incurs his wrath when he watches her porn flick, the one in which his brother's daughter, Doreen, appears. He probably did not mean to kill Glenda. In the novel, he drops her off on the road as a diversion for the police. In the film, she is probably still in the trunk of the car when it is pushed into the water. Margaret was his brother's lover, seeing him once a week. She was also married. It is mentioned that Doreen stayed with Margaret, so Margaret must have had something to with Doreen's career in the porn films. She is left unclad and injected with a drug on the property to get Kinnear in even more trouble when the police raid the place.

Michael Caine is one of the best character actors there is. That is why he constantly gets work.
