It's a slow build–don't give up on it too early

If I hadn't previously seen The Parallax View by the same filmmaker and been so blown away by that, I might not have stuck with this one as it takes a little time to sink its teeth in you. I ended up watching it over three days and four or five different sessions; but I found it quite rewarding that way. Someone on another thread said it was like reading a book, and books are often enjoyed in segments, so I would recommend trying that if you find your attention wandering a bit at the beginning.

I remember finding the film a bit dry, or dull, on first watch (had seen and adored Parallax, too) but found myself drawn back to it, appreciating more and more each time; and by now its one of the most compulsively rewatchable films I know, just something so uniquely hypnotic and disquieting about it.

What a beautiful way to describe it! That's exactly the power this film has over me today. I must have seen it over 20 times by now, but every single time I watch it pulls me back into its hypnotic, unsettling atmosphere. It's almost like a too real of a documentary which disturbingly encompassed the exact time and place in history.
