The scene where Bree goes to the 'john's' hotel to "make a quick $50" was just weird. First of all, the guy looked 35-40 years old and he was all quiet and acted embarrassed like a virginal teenage boy. He was just creepy. Then when Bree was enticing him to tell her what he wanted, he was acting so shy that he had to whisper it in her ear real odd. The way she talked to him was just so phony; like when she goes, "oh, that would be fantastic!" just sounded so fake. Those kind of responses would get a girl fired off of a phone sex line. And when they were doing it and she glances at her wristwatch, then starts moaning, "oh, my angel.!"?? Why would a prostitute even say stuff like that?? Can't figure what guys found sexy about her, and really hard to believe she had "return customers".

So, Bree sounded fake & the John was creepy: I think that was intentional. Call girls fake it, the guys can be weird & the situation can be awkward. I loved that she looked at her watch: that said it all. But, Jane Fonda/Bree not sexy? C'mon.

Contrary to what is typically portrayed in television and movies, prostitutes usually look less than attractive; they are usually drug-addicted and skanky. So Bree (played by Jane Fonda) would have been considered exceptional.
Now, the whole point of the guy whispering what he wanted into Bree's ear worked on two levels: One, it let our imaginations do the work, which is always better than what is on screen. Two, the movie came out in 1971 at a time when audiences would have been shocked by such raunchy details. (It's just a guess, but I think the guy wanted to have anal sex with Bree. Now, do you think audiences would have felt comfortable and sympathetic towards the character, knowing Bree was engaging in such dirty behavior? And do you think Jane Fonda would have wanted her career tainted by forever being known as the woman who played the girl who for $100 takes it up the butt?) -

Not hardly, since I'm a girl. I would just imagine a guy would need someone more believable to make his fantasy work. The way she responded to him was just very unemotional and lacked excitement: "That sounds fantastic!" just something about her whole tone was off. I guess guys are a lot different now; maybe they didn't require much 44 years ago.

to her, it was just a job and something she'd done a million times before, and would hold the same level of excitement for her as for those who punch a time clock going to their job. also, that john wasn't demanding and wouldn't need much effort from bree to get what he wanted. -

She'd have been varying her routine depending on the john. It's worth bearing in mind that a significant part of any call girl's clientele is made up of men who can't get what the girl is offering at home and whose sexual experience is limited. Here, she was confronted by someone who clearly fits that description. So she boosts his ego and encourages him in a way that is patently false to the viewer, but which the john never questions because (a) he doesn't know any better and (b) he's being offered something he's never had before (or very rarely). I would suspect that whatever he asked for would actually be considered pretty tame by her standards, but she makes it out to be pretty daring - which is what he wants to hear. Remember that she had a completely different routine with Mr Goldfarb(?), where she poses as a sophisticated woman of the world, recently returned from Europe, with a very literate way of telling her story. I would suspect that Bree, like all successful call girls, would be all things to all men.

I thought Bree was quite sexy and enticing. She really knew how to get into the heads of her johns so she could figure out which exact buttons she should push to satisfy their various individual whims.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
