      I was just coming on here to mention this score. I'm watching it now and I think the music is probably the creepiest soundtrack I ever heard, even over The Omen with the Gregorian chant. The woman's voice is quite haunting and creepy. I can't really think of a scarier score. And Klute isn't even a horror movie,

        Yes, great score. At first i thought it was David Shire, who worked with Pakula later (on the incomparable All The President's Men, but it ended up being Michael Small, of course, of whom i'd never heard.

          I love this score. Shades of "Rosemary's Baby" la-la-la lullaby, but more minimalistic, free-form. Just gorgeous, and spooky as all get out.

            Yes, it is very similar to Rosemary's Baby.

              Finally saw this for the first time. Not sure why it took me that long. As far as the score, all through the film, I kept thinking "Dirty Harry". Don't remember any specifics, but maybe this was a 1971 thing.

                Yes, yes, yes it makes me feel as if I'm watching a sheer curtain moving, gently rippling back and forth through a window it takes me in, it NEVER competes with the story . . .and the subtle lullaby-like progression brings that sense of some kind of naivete, innocence

                various points Bree (great character name) really
                doesn't know what she's been
                playing at all these years and the unseen dangers.
                The sound and musical score
                in "A Streetcar Named Desire"
                has some of that same effect
                for me. These elements can
                entirely make or break the
                tension and magic of a film
                like "Klute" . . . .
                Though I was in my early 20's
                when "Klute" was released, I
                hadn't seen it until a couple
                years ago . . . Now, I record
                it when it's on TCM and
                watch it a few times over a
                month. It's beautifully
                seductive on many levels for
                me.
                Though Jane has often been
                as actress I had difficulty
                connecting with oddly,
                because of the unusually low
                timbre of her voice and that the way she spoke often sounded somewhat too self-assured I can't quite imagine any other actress delivering such a unique, powerful, spot-on feel to
                this amazing character. For me, this is the most outstanding, truly memorable performance of her career thus far.
