Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Klute

Jane Fonda took the role in Klute because she was broke from her substantial financial support of the Black Panthers. This was mentioned in the book Aid And Comfort : Jane Fonda In North Vietnam. I wonder if this is mentioned in the recent documentary about the Black Panthers.

She has stated publicly in interviews that she used much of what she was making from movies in those days to support political causes she believed in. I guess that's what you call putting your money where your mouth is.

You gotta respect her for getting so involved, though her father was pretty negative about her involvement, basically claiming that she saw how her brother Peter was and decided she had to one up him and threw herself into "the cause" head first. She's a good actress and obviously intelligent, but she does not seem to understand the word moderation at all. But she's been way more successful than I have, so who am I to judge!

She's mellowed a good deal with age. But you're right, she was a real tiger back in the day. I remember her being VERY controversial when I was a child, and my father (a former Marine) absolutely hating her. It's funny.the topic of the whole Vietnam fiasco came up a few years back and Dad commented along the lines of, "that happened decades ago when she was pretty much a kid. People need to just let that go."
You are right.I remember hearing/reading when younger that her father was furious with her for all of her political stuff. He also was furious that she made the film Barbarellawhich he saw as an embarrassment to the family.

So I guess Dad has mellowed with age as well? Yeah, I only read that one page about this in the book I mentioned, while trying to find out how much she got paid for Klute. The internet has tons of information on it, but not always exactly what you want, but there's always something new to learn! I am sure she, her brother, and her father were always at odds, would have been fun to be there for a family dinner!

Yeah, he mellowed, too. He's only a year older than Jane Fonda, in fact. And, yeah.I bet those family get togethers were pretty rough back in the day!
