I admit, this movie is one of my favorites, but I can't go over the fact that..
Mary and Elizabeth never met in person and Mary WASN'T English.
And apparently, what they also neglect to mention is, despite that canty love scene between Mary and Bothwell, he actually raped her, knocked her up, she miscarried a set of twins, then married him -

Actually Bothwell raping her is actually just an ugly accusation. She was in love with him (whether he was in love with her is another matter) hence her ride to see him when he was wounded. People just said he raped her because it was not seemly for someone in her position to sleep with Bothwell (or James Hepburn to give his name rather than title) and he had a LOT of enemies.

No one is one hundred percent sure one way or another. Did she love him? Did she only know that he was her best chance to keep her throne? Was it Stockholm Syndrome? Was she raped and then determined to put the best face on it? There's no way of knowing.
