Radar was the crux of MAS*H in my opinion. His role was irreplaceable. Bless the corporal for being able to go home, albeit for terribly sad reasons, but the show just goes downhill after his departure.

They tried to continue with him on a spin off called "WALTER," where he played a cop(?) and then he was a guest star on the other spin off, "After Mash."
Yeah, MASH was his home.

I think Radar, as a character, had lost his appeal about a season before he left. His character felt all wrong.
This is odd but I actually think the departure of Frank Burns is when the show irreversibly changed for the worse.
It wasn't the first blow. I think Wayne Rogers leaving was the first one. Henry Blake the second and the third, and final, the departure of Burns.
When they decided to turn even Hot Lips against Frank, that really was the beginning of the end for him and the show. It was like beating a dead horse. It went from funny hijinks but a fair fight between Hawkeye and Trapper (or BJ) and Frank and Hot Lips to downright cruelty. I actually bad for Frank at times in the last few seasons.
I do not think I laughed a single time during the Winchester era of the show.
The first few seasons are just about as perfect as any comedy series ever, melding great comedy with genuine moments of moving drama.
