Radar did a heck of a lot more work.
And how was Klinger made a corporal anyway if he was always bucking for a Section 8?
Corporal Klinger. I'm section eight, Head to toe. I'm wearing a Warner bra. I like to play with dolls. My last wish is to be buried in my mother's wedding gown. I'm nuts. I should be out.

That's a good question. Maybe after being temporarily promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, he decided he was happy being a Corporal and didn't want to move up.

I think it was because of the image that had been established for the two characters.
Radar - even though the actor was obviously MUCH older than his character - was almost always portrayed as kind of an innocent 'kid;' and that wouldn't fit with the standard reputation for a Sergeant. Klinger, though, was always portrayed as cunning and worldly-wise, a guy who grew up on the tough streets of a big town, so he was a more natural 'fit' for a Sergeant's rank.

Interesting question; I'd never thought about it.
Your answer sounds pretty reasonable regarding Radar. I can't remember when Max was promoted to corporal; how he reached E-4 is almost a better question than how he reached sergeant.

Promotion to E-4 has always been fairly automatic. After that, there are requirements that must be met. In those days, I think the CO had a lot of levity in who got promoted and who didn't.
            I blame autocorrect.
You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

Not in the navy, at least in the late 60s. You had to be a striker for a particular job (MOS in the army?) like radioman, yeoman, damage repairman, etc. Then you had to serve 1 year as an E-3 before you could be tested (both written and OTJ).
I wanted to be a warehouseman, but in my 21 months at PH (I was told) a position never opened up, so I stayed an E-3 (seaman, PFC equivalent.)

Promotion to Corporal is almost automatic? You never had my Platoon Commander. He had a serious hard on with the specific intent of destroying me, because he was convinced that I was the biggest drug user ever to serve in the Marine Corps, because it was beyond his comprehension that two Marines in the same company could have the same last name. Eventually, he transferred overseas. A few months later, I was transferred overseas. What are the odds that with all of the units on Okinawa, I would end up in his platoon. How about 100%?
