I looked up James Cann's height today and it's 5'9. Just how short is Pacino really? He looks a foot shorter than a 6 foot Leo in OUATIH.

True, but it's not unheard of. I have a couple of cousins that are shorter than their dad

I honestly don't understand the OP's problem with the height issue.
These things all vary within a family. My husband and I are both fairly short people… him being 5 foot 9, me being just below 5 feet. Our son is taller than us, being 6 feet. There are tall people on both sides.
It's the same with features. My siblings and I don't all resemble each other.
I really don't understand the OP's trouble with casting. This is 4 months ago? A different account/sock? Whatever…. It's a shame that these things bother the OP. Something like that spoils the whole film!

I did used to think that children were usually taller than their parents because I saw how they usually were, but that's not necessarily so
Peggy Lipton's daughters are both shorter than she was
About resemblance, that reminds me, there was a Dateline about a man who had murdered 2 wives. He's doofy looking so I didn't get what they saw in him. His son was on the show and he did realize that his father had killed his mother. Not like some kids who say their parent is innocent and blindly support them
I looked him up on facebook and told him I had seen him on Dateline, I thought he was a cool guy and that he looks nothing like his father
He wrote back and said "Thankfully"

Oh wow! The guy wrote back? That was really nice!
As for features, we sometimes get certain things from our parent… I got my father's fingers.. short, and tapered.. hard to describe, but they are his hands.
Some people may not look at all like their parents or a sibling, but they may have a certain way of walking or certain expressions.
As for being shorter or taller than our parents, we all start out being smaller.

So true!
I noticed the shape of my arms are like my dad's and I have his smile, ears and hair texture
My hair and eye color are like my mom's

Yeah, Brando developed quite an eating disorder. Pacino used to be so good looking. He hasn't aged well
Probably a smoker and spent too much time in the sun

Movies rarely get what you're talking about right. Though I never questioned the casting of Caan or Pacino. At least they gave good performances.
I would say that Mary Tyler Moore and Timothy Hutton matched up well in Ordinary People. -

I thought that James Caan was fine and wholly credible playing an Italian-American in
The Godfather
. Nationalities tend to very as to looks and body type, especially among people of European ancestry. In
The Godfather
the Corleones were Sicilian, and people from Sicily and Southern Italy in general tend to be shorter and darker than than those from the north. When I was a kid I went to a school that had a large Italian population, mostly, but not all, from the south. There were tall guys with reddish hair, short blonde guys, tall blonde girls, little kids, big ones, with many who just didn't look stereotypically Italian, sometimes due to having a parent of another nationality, but that was usually just a bit different than usual.
Al Pacino fit the bill for me in
The Godfather
as to his looks and stature, as he indeed of Italian ancestry. He did strike me as too short to play such a tough guy, but then his character wasn't known as a scrapper, and he'd attended an Ivy League university. I found Pacino more of a stretch as someone with that kind of education. He didn't come across as highly educated, as at least some of his tough, city and ethnic background ought to have attenuated due to his education and military background. Overall, I found his performance to be effective in spite of all that.
Overall, the movie works for me, although some of the veteran players who ought to have been good fits for their roles gave at best journeyman performances; and their familiarity took them out of the movie somewhat, but that's me. I think of Richard Conte as Barzini, and capable enough, but I couldn't forget who the actor was. It was the same with Sterling Hayden as the tough Irish cop. Again, it was Sterling Hayden in a movie. I couldn't suspend disbelief, although I like Hayden as an actor. Another actor who struck me as off was Robert Duvall. His voice was wrong for a big city east coast lawyer, and his mannerisms were distracting. -
