Did anyone feel sorry for Fredo Corleone?

true, but no one would have stood up to Sonny
Sadly, there were people who did stand up to him. Carlos had an axe to grind so he went to the enemy for help. The enemy had their own axe to grind. Nothing personal against Sonny. It was strictly business.

I did feel sorry for him. As others have said, he was sweet, but slow. He had a different self image. He was Michael's older brother. He saw himself as one who deserved as much, if not more respect. While he loved Micheal, he wanted the things that his younger brother had. A loving wife, kids to love, a prominent place in the family.
Sadly, he never thought about the consequences of his actions.

Right. That was something he couldn't understand. He saw himself in a different way than everyone else saw him. He never understood his limitations. I think that is something that many people take a long time learning. Some never learn.

exactly! he was no dumber than a guy like frank pantagelie, but he thought he deserved the big chair via birth right rather than abilities. Even pantangelie said that he himself didn't have the head for complex deals.

Yes simply because he looked so weak and harmless. Plus, it was his own brother who ordered the hit on him. I know he made a mistake which could had cost Michael's life… but it wasn't intentional, while Michael knew the outcome.
