This is absolutely one of my favorite movies; I try to turn on every thinking person I meet to it.
The opening monologue by Nicholson is brilliantfloors me every time I see itand the beautiful punchline of Nicholson's grandfather to the story that it didn't really happen that way always cracks me up.
It's Nicholson's best uncharacteristic role followed closely by "About Schmidt". Still, this one is better. My favorite Nicholson role next to his sailor in "The Last Detail".
This doesn't even begin to touch the rest of the movie, which is equally brilliant.
Forgive the hyperbole, but this movie mesmorizes me. I feel safe since I'm preaching to the initiated.
A truly great movie. I miss the golden age of American movies in the 70s. Things haven't been the same since.
I am looking forward to Uwe Boll's rumored remake of "Five Easy Pieces" however.

I've been wanting to see more of Jack Nicholson's earlier films, and this one is near the top of my must-see list (as well as The Shooting). The King of Marvin Gardens sounds great. I'll be watching out for this film.
"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

The King of Marvin Gardens is such an underrated masterpiece and easily one of the greatest overlooked classics of 70s cinema.
The performances are incredible all round. Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern are equally sensational, the former underplaying in a nicely low-key style and the later a ball of frenetic nervous energy. And the wonderful Ellen Burstyn gives one of the great female performances of the era as the fading, mentally unstable beauty queen. Such a shame that none of them were even nominated for an Oscar!
            Great movie.

Just saw this movie last week and I was blown away. I hadn't even heard about it until a few months ago. I found out about it from a reference book that I have. In an entry about Ellen Burstyn the author says she does her best work in this film. She certainly is amazing in her role. Nicholson, Dern, and the others were impressive too, but I'm particularly surprised that Burstyn didn't at least get an Oscar nod! I also agree that the screenplay is one of the best of that era.

Shame we don't have many movies like this nowadays.

The acting was top notch, especially from Nicholson and Dern and the screenplay had a surreal quality to it.
                        Its that man again!!
