Did anyone else want to smack the crap out of Rogo? He was so obnoxious and a bully. Every little thing sent him into a rage especially his wife. Why so mean Mr Rogo?

It was his domineering personality. Linda wasn't much better. People always comment on the character traits of the people, though the critics in the 70s said they had little depth. The film would have been pretty boring without the personality conflicts. Hell, it would be Wolfgang Petersons Poseidon.

Ernest Borgnine knew he was in a piece of sh!t and didn't care. He is a smart actor and he knew his behavior made no sense. Most of the other actors did too. Shelly Winters and Red Buttons behaved as though giving a master class in Yiddish Theatre. Roddy McDowell with his deep Scots accent, just falling in love with Carole Lynly's singing, that is, before she became semi-catatonic when it was her turn to swim underwater.

Rogo was indeed quite the antagonistic prick. He was meant to be a continual foil for Reverend Scott. He was basically the Doubting Thomas to Scott's Christ.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
