For '72, I can only surmise it was supposed to be 'shocking' to hear a child speak like this, hence why he got a closeup like that as well (same for Hackman's pompous ass, also a closeup).
They are only down to offend granma and have nothing to do with plot, so they end up very easy to cut out.
I got the movie on VHS and both shots were in there. As soon as I saw them, I could tell by the way they were set up, not by what they were saying, what their intention was for being there.
Is Linda Rogo's calling Belle Rosen a fat ass cut out?
My brother saw that and was quite stymied. "There was no need for that," he said.
We never really knew Linda was the 'scared, misunderstood girl from the wrong side of the streets' of the movie. As kids, we totally ignored all the dialogue and watched the adventure. Only when I got the movie on VHS did we see all of this. -

My parents took me to see this on my 10th birthday. During my party that evening with relatives, I recall my parents telling my aunt and uncle about this line in hushed tones while serving the cake. It WAS scandalous at the time.

Linda Rogo wasn't a bitch, she was a scared little girl who had grown up on the streets. She was under an extremely stressful situation, as was everyone else. In the wide screen version when they're all standing on that platform and they're feeding Hackman the rope while he's swimming through corridors towards the engine room; Belle is going on about how she's the only one trained for that, Linda screams "Will you shut up!!"
Immediately after she screams that you can see her glance at the kids and she looks remorseful. Seconds later she's frantically trying to pull the rope to bring Hackman back and then Belle dives in, Linda she looks frightened for Belle.
No, she's not a bitch, she's just reacting to a horribly horrible situation. -

well, I dont know, even a bitch reacts to a horribly horrible situation.
What if Sally Kellerman who supposedly was offered the role ,played the part? I don't find Kellerman likable. -

She hasn't played many likable characters in the past, but then why wouldn't she have made a good Linda? I think I posted too soon.

Kirkland wasn't a name yet, and still doing bit roles. Kirkland, for example, was "the photographer", in 76's A Star is Born. She may have been too young for the role at that time also. I bumped into her once.
