If it ishe mispelled his OWN LAST NAME(check his ridiculous 1st post) hee hee
I've never been privy to Brett Sommers, but she really is part of the structure and form of how Match Game was shaped and adored, even though she wasn't even on the first couple of weeks of the showin her defense tho', she absolutely RULES in every guest appearance she ever made as Blanche, Oscar Madison's (Jack Klugman!)ex-wife on The Odd Couple series, and yes, regarding her MG run she can be really hard to take sometimes and most of her one liners fall flat and are met with deaf silence, BUT she was part of the team nucleus that consisted of (like it or not) her, Gene, Richard until he split in 1978 and Charles. As great as people like Betty White and McLean Stevenson (who to me, did some of his funniest work of all time on MG) were, they were not part of that core teamthe show always revolved around themand besides, Brett is great when she plays the comic foil to all of Charles Nelson Reilly's hysterical witticisms and good natured insults towards her.

Nope, sorry, don't think so. As someone who watched this show when it first aired (faithfully I might add) starting in 1973 through 1982, I would say that Brett added a unique aspect to the show - as much as Gene, Richard and Charles did. Brett was a staple of the show and clearly the producers liked what she brought to the group - otherwise why keep her after that one "required" appearance (per Jack Klugman's conditions for his appearing on the preview week). Back in the old days, it wasn't about who was pretty or what not. She was fun and funny.

A few thoughts about Brett Earlier in the thread somebody said Brett once called another panelist "fat" and the woman was clearly upset. Who was it? Also although Brett isn't exactly a great wit, it's more just by virtue of being kind of offbeat and off-the-wall and a little bit of a train wreck that makes her so compelling to watch. And I mean train wreck in the most complimentary way
Did anyone see the one where Gene asks Fannie if she got what she wanted for Christmas & Fannie replies: "No I still have to share the dressing room with Brett" -

If I may insert myself into this conversation:
Blackie-5, I believe I may know the episode being spoken of, as I have it in my MG collection. HOWEVER, the person who stated that she directly called the actress "FAT" is somewhat of a misquote, though I can see how it could be thought of. Note: Maybe that poster who said she said that to be mean should watch that episode being spoken about again, and MAKE SURE that what they are saying is ACTUALLY what is being said, NOT an assumption.
I don't think Brett did that to start a feud. She never had a problem with anyone she worked with, but if that actress did get upset, it was because the woman misunderstood Brett. The actress in question, is Connie Stevens. I believe this episode was a Match Game PM from 1979 or 1980.
Brett has actually said, "You tell 'em, fat lady!" The only other one I can think of, and not particularly from that episode was, "Get your hands off that fat lady!" However, the first one mentioned is the one used in that episode.
She wasn't CALLING Connie fat; quite the contrary. If you watch previous episodes, she says the same thing to Gene, to Charles, to Richard, and they are MEN, meaning they said something that put someone in their place (ie, when Gene would grab the camera and pull it the other direction in fun after jokingly hollering at the camera to shift his focus).
And as for Fannie's wish, that was the Christmas 1978 episode, wasn't it? Fannie Flagg was one of the funniest people ever to cross the Match Game stage. That episode kills me every time.
Hope that helps you out, Blackie.

I totally agree that Fannie was the funniest one, but it just wouldn't be Match Game without Brett. I love Brett, she is my favorite regular along with Charles. Richard Dawson is the one I never really cared for. Interactions between Brett and Charles, and Brett and Fannie are classics. When there is any combination of those three(Brett, Charles or Fannie), you know the show is going to be funny. In fact, I saw an episode just this morning without Brett and it just wasn't very good or funny. To me, Brett made the show. -

How DARE you make all of those insulting remarks about one of the 'sparks' who make "MG" the successful show that it was!
First off, I guess you forgot that Brett gave up smoking in 1977, and mentioned it on the show millions of times. So what if Brett doesn't have 'supermodel' looks - Richard Dawson, Elaine Joyce, and Patty Duke (to name a few) also smoked, but it didn't affect their looks any!
The reason that she 'got the job' was that Jack KLUGMAN didn't want to keep on doing the show, and it was the smartest move they made, because the "Sonny & Cher" banter between Brett and Charles Nelson Reilly was timeless!
Also, so what if she made a little fun of the 'new girls' - so did the other semi-regulars, who also got in on the act.
As for Betty White, the fun 'put down banter' between her and Brett was all in fun - if those one liners didn't exist, the show wouldn't have been nearly as funny.
One more thing - the woman knew how to laugh. That is one aspect of this show that drew me to it. I knew that once Brett started to laugh that everything was happy and good on the show.
I just think that you are jealous that you weren't on a successful show, or your remarks wouldn't have been so hateful to Brett - again, SHAME ON YOU! -

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE! Brett is one of the best on the show and any show without her is just not quite right. -

"I would also like to add that Betty White was not "famous" when she began Match Game and she was most definitely not a legend of any sort. She was talented and had done some TV programs, but she wasn't much more famous than Brett was at that point. She had just begun guest-starring on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and wasn't even close to beginning The Golden Girls. (Which most agree was her most popular role.)"
To say Betty White was not famous at that point is not at all true, she had about three shows up to that point (semi-popular) that have mostly sadly been lost to time. As a matter of fact, when they cast her as Sue Ann, the were looking for a "Betty White-type." Hmmmm.sounds famous to me.
LOL, but seriously, I agree with you on everything else. Brett DOES rock!!
