I think this show, although it has a very limited amount of episodes, is pure genius. Michael Crawford harkens back to all the old silent film comics (many of which are favourite comedians of his) Harold Lloyd (whom he used as a basis for the character of Frank), Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Mack Sennet, the Keystone Cops - and he achieves some of the most astounding comedy and stunt work ever performed by an actor.
The one scene that I find astounding and even terrifying is when he's hanging off the back end of the car over a cliff. Its terrifying, because you hope Michael Crawford won't fall, and yet at the same time its hilarious to see him get hit in the face with a bag of fertilizer and your curious to see what would happen in case he fell - would he jump up on stilts back onto the cliff?
I admit there are some episodes with bad plots - but Michael continues to do his best and he usually shines out in the part of "Frank Spencer". I do love how Michael included some of his own real life factos into the character of Frank and plot and the scene of him singing to Jessica is one of the most sweetest things I ever saw (and a precusor of the things to come - singing wise - for Michael Crawford). I think the most refreshing thing about Frank Spencer is he is so innocent and child-like, and to alot of people with adult or closed-set minds that is a huge aggreviation. I mean he doesn't want to do bad things most of the time - he's just purely accident prone. The only characters I have seen come close to touching Michael Crawford's "Frank Spencer" is Dick van Dyke's "Robert Petrie" (on "The Dick van Dyke Show"), Tim Allen's "Tim Taylor" (both of whom are the extremes of accident prone) and Betty White's "Rose Nylund" (from "The Golden Girls").
The relationship between him and Betty (Michele Dotrice - older sister of Karen Dotrice, star of "Mary Poppins") is the most incredible marriage I ever saw. That, despite the fact he blows up houses and destroys things, and, to an extent, ruins people's lives - his wife still remains with him, even if barely and forgives and tolerates his clumsiness. She apparently is the one of the two with the more "worldly" mind - but at the same time, as one person said, she has a zaininess of her own that, standing on her own, would make herself a black mirah in the world. They make a good pair indeed and its nice to see that they both dearly love each other.
The sad thing is PBS (who usually showcases alot of the British comedies, unless of course you can afford satellite and get "BBC America") does not showcase this series.

      Me!
I loved watching the old brit comedies for their simple plotlines and uncomplicated humour. "Some mothers.." was relatively clean material compared to some of the more raunchier stuff floating around at the time and even these days.
Michael, as Frank continues to amaze me even though it's nearly a decade since I saw it on t.v.
The most surprising fact was him being cast as the Phantom in ALW's POTO.
A combination of superb comedy and a voice to match.
I wish Mr Crawford luck in his future projects.

I'm a fan! I fully agree with you,
              emma crawfordgreene
. It is undoubtably one of the best comedies ever. Even if you've been having a bad day, you can watch this and I can guarantee that it wouldn't take you long to laugh again! I'd much prefer to watch the classic British comedies rather than the current ones because they are a lot better, as well as being inoffensive and less cringeworthy.

I believe this was the best comedy of all time, ahead of everything. i just loved it in nearly every scene when he meets someone he just naturally drives them to the point of insanity lol my god. too bad they only made 2 seasons i reckon he could of squeezed a few more in. What amazes me is he is a opera singer. For someone to be such a comedian then do something so serious just shows how much of a talent man he is.

I love some mothers do have them. It is certainly in my top 5. Although I love the show it was just the first 2 series that I loved and the specials. When he returned to the role in the 3rd series Frank Spencer was more arrogent, he had lost the innocence and the childlike attitude, and he came across more posh and stuck up.
                                          Just my opinion.
