"The medical technology then is not what we have today. If you could of seen the suffering that Lynn went through, I feel your comments would of been more enlightened to favor her decision."
I was just watching a segment of "Sunshine" on Youtube(the scene where "Sam" is singing in the pub & "Kate" is watching him perform), & reading some of the comments below the segment.
This one poster wrote that the movie always annoyed her because "A young mother learns she has cancer in her leg and must have it removed or die, She decides cannot live without her leg and refuses to have it removed. Her husband is a struggling musician and since she wants her young daughter to remember her - she records messages on a tape recorder She left her child behind, motherless for vanity."

Go to to Youtube.com, type in "Sunshine 1973." A list should come up. The one I found is entitled "Sunshine 1973 - Um Dia De Sol - My Sweet Lady In Bar" it was added by a poster named Paulorobe(though he wasn't the one who posted a message attacking Lynne). -

I could not find the video! You are right, people make comments when they do not know what they are talking about. One person removed their comment about Lyn being selfess wanting to die instead Living. They had no ideal what that girl was going through. These people were not there, I was! They didn't hear her crying and screaming with pain. There is not too many people on this earth that could of tolerated that type of pain. People can say what they want to, I know what was going on! Like I have said previously, the medical technology wasn't near what they have today! I know her family misses her. Tom is now gone and he will comfort her once again!

Well it is 2011 and with today Medical Technology I have told my Doctors no to Amputation, I am 47 years I have had 5 fem-pop bypasses on my right leg and now have stents this is the last thing they say they can do for my leg and yes I agree with Lyn I feel losing my leg would make me not whole.
I watch the Sunshine Movie as a child and grew remembering the movie about her dieing with cancer and leaving her baby and the love she had for life, but not until a month or so ago had I read or saw anything about the movie again, my husband found the movie online and ordered it for me and we watched as I cried I didn't remember the part of them wanting to amputate her leg but I knew what she was saying, my husband was having a hard time with me telling the Doctors not to amputate my leg but after watching this movie he feels he knows why I have done this, every person has to go deep down into their self to find the answers so no one needs to question anyone else's answers, I live in pain daily I have 2 children and 3 grandchildren with 1 on the way and yes I want to be a part of their life's but I need to be whole.

Jim,
Thank you for your facts, I never saw the movie I have the record album, in which it shows lyn and she refers to her daughter as Jenny, on the cover but the words she does say jill. It is terrible that her tapes were stolen as they were to be her legency to her daughter.
I hope that her daughter grew up and that tom was able to share stories of her mother with her.

Second, You mentioned above that you have lost 2 children yourself. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences. When you lose someone you love, no matter how long it has been, you miss them every day. -

Your welcome! And I miss my Little boy and my daughter. You're right about them being on your mind no matter how long it's been. I lost my son in 1969 and my daughter in 1995, but I still feel the emptiness inside.

I don't understand the angry tone of your original post, and you seem to be starting in the middle of a story, like we should know what you're talking about, but you should really learn to differentiate between a documentary and a drama inspired by true life events, which is what the film Sunshine was.

Well I just bought it & watched it again for the first time since 1973 & right from the start it says some of the names had been changed to protect the privacy of the real individuals involved. So I don't see how you can be upset over dishonesty except for the part about him not being there when she died. And as far as saying it's not right for John Denver to get all the credit for writing the song. A lot of songs are inspired by people other than the one who actually put it together in song form. Once someone officially gets credit for contributing to a song, poem, movie, etcthey are legally entitled to profit from it. Should everyone who inspires a work of art, get a piece of the pie?
Him buying a motorcycle at the end was probably because at the beginning of the movie, they had a fight over her medical bills because he was saving to buy a mini bike & the movie sort of made him look selfish the whole way through with him getting so upset with her for accepting her impending death. Plus a "hippie" as he was portrayed, driving a station wagon just doesn't look right to most people.
I wondered why the series didn't last very long. I loved it. I don't know why, because I was only 7 in 1973, but that movie really affected me. I had been wanting to see it again for years & loved the tv series & movie sequel "Sunshine Christmas" which I also just bought & watched. -

As I said in the beginning; my understanding is that Tom brought suit against the people that agreed to tell the truth from Lynn's tapes and diary. I realise Movies are made to get the interrest of people to make money! As I said before; they didn't need fiction to make that movie! I understand the changing of names, but not the rest of the fictional crap!

Jaclyn Boyle aka Lyn Heltondied November, 1971 at the Childrens Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Jackie left behind her 18 month old daughter, Jennifer. Jennifer never had the opportunity to know the beautiful person her mother was. The book by Norma Klein, "Sunshine" whose title is all one needs to know to understand Jackie. I spent three years with Jackie Boyle being her best friend while she was a student at CCHS. We parted when Jackie moved to Walden, Colorado but exchanged letters until she was stricken with osteo sarcoma.
I was living in Oceanside, California when I discovered Jackie had passed away. Something told me to buy the Sunday LA Times and I did. In it I found the article about her death. Similar occurrences happened with the Woman's Day and Reader's Digest magazines, all of which carried articles about her death and a picture of Jennifer sitting on Jackie's lap. I never purchased those magazines until something told me to. After the first incident with the LA Times, I realized who was telling me to buy them.
Years later I found out that Jennifer has not been told who her mother really was. Jackie's family has informed me that Jennifer was led to believe things about her mother that are certainly untrue and need to be rectified. When I was told about this I quickly realized the purpose in buying the magazines showing pictures of mother and daughter. A daughter who meant so much to Jackie that she spent the last year of her life spending five to six hours a day writing letters to Jennifer and worrying about what will happen to her little girl after she is gone. Jennifer has been estranged from Jackie's entire family until the last two years. The purpose will soon unfold!
