It was Potsie's airhead personality that hindered him. Jennifer really cared for him. The actors were married in real life.

Once Potsie and Jennifer hooked up as Happy Days' rendition of Donny and Marie, I know this sucker was in the shark tank.
My "#3" key is broken so I'm putting one here so i can cut & paste with it.

Lori Beth may not have looked as good as Jennifer but it was Jennifer who didn't last on the series.
          As for Potsie.1950s girls
(or any for that matter) do not want to date a guy who :

          1. Calls himself by an elementary school nick-name.
          2. Has a dorkier personality than Pat Boone.
          3. Went from being just a goofball to an absolute moron.
          4. Over 5 years after graduating
High School,is still hanging around the local teen hangout.
          5. Is in his mid-20s,out of college & still hasn't found a profession and yammers on & on about how his dad treats him.
(I thought James Darren should have played his dad.)

I couldn't figure out why they made Potsie dumber as the show went on, it seemed like the actor deserved better. Plus Anson Williams seemed like a talented singer. Potsie actually seemed far more put together as a person in the early years then the later years. It made no sense and I would have rather seen Potsie mature and grow up as the show went on instead of being the show's permanent idiot character.

While i don;t like favorite characters leaving a show,
I think he should have left in '80 with the guys or elese by the end of
the '80-'81 season. Maybe have Warren get married by reuniting with Jennifer.
He's a fair singer, nothing spectacular but he and Donny Most both did albums, neither of which scored them any hits. I do have a 45 picture sleeve of Anson's sigle, still looking for the actual record.

Many sitcom stars of years passed received recording contracts. It helped to advertise the shows.

                      Yep.
Like Shelley Fabres & Paul Peterson from "The Donna Reed Show" (1958-1965)
In 1962,Shelley had the big #1 hit
"Johnny Angel" (2 weeks and the follow up "Johnny Loves Me" #21,
                      1962 also,Paul had two top 40 hits
"She Can't Find Her Keys" #19 & "My Dad" #6 (in early 1963)

David Soul got very lucky with his one and only hit "Don't Give Up On Us" (#1 for one week in Spring of 1977).
I own the self-titled album it came from and it's like John Denver only not as deep or engaging.
As for Jack Wagner,my high school peers & I had no end of fun, making fun of that guy!

To each their own, I don't believe either would win a Grammy but they weren't as bad as some of what's out there. Anyway, their TV status helped them to get recording contracts. It adds to the advertisement of their shows.

                                    Potsie 'mutated' for several reasons
Early on he was actually 'the cool one' of the 3 boys
as Fonzie took over the show he became Ralph's sidekick so he slowly became dumber than Ralph
Then when Richie and Ralph where gone they needed excuses to keep him around
so he was given a crappy home life to explain why he was still dropping in on the Cunninghams
above all of this you also have the issue of Williams apparently asking his Fans (or at least the ones who wrote him letters) to write the show and ask for Potsie to be allowed to sing more
odds are more than a few writers saw this as kind of a d!(K move and once they figured it out they decided to punish him by making him less and less cool

Did Anson Williams really ask fans to write the show and request that Postie would sing more?

I think it was Ron Howard who said that Potsie, originally, was meant to be a sort of older and wiser character for Richie to look up to. Then, as Fonzie began to get more and more popular and take on that role, they had to do something with Potsie. Since his previous position no longer made sense, they appear to have decided to make him into more of a comic relief character (often paired with Ralph), which I always thought was a shame.

Anson Williams did okay in real life. He was married and had a daughter with Lorrie Mahaffey, the actress who played Potsie's girlfriend Jennifer Jerome.
