I always thought Laura's nightmare sequences were pretty intense for a "family" show.

yeah, but back then parents get this
      wait for it
      TALKED
      WITH
      THEIR KIDS!
the show was deemed appropriate back then because most parents watched with their children and were able to gauge how intense the episode was going to be. there was no such thing as television show ratings because parents took their jobs as parents SERIOUSLY!
      Oh God. Fortune
      vomits
      on my eiderdown once more.

You tell 'em, buddy! I grew up during those days, and my parents talked to me the way I talk with my children today. Still, there were shocking scenes on LHOTP that one wouldn't expect by its comfy exterior. The blood and gore wasn't shown on the previews, so parents couldn't always shield their little loved ones from it.
Another example: When Dr. Baker was called to that fever-stricken village (where Mr. Edwards brought the fever back inadvertently) to treat the sick. At the beginning of one scene he stoically says, "you can carry out the body", and two men lift this blanket-covered corpse up and out.
He who conquers himself is mightier than he who conquers a city.

Alice Garvey and the baby burning up in the blind schooldamn, that was just a graphic scene all the way around and probably scared the *hit out of a lot of kids.

I am 41 now, and I STILL remember how horrified I was when I watched that scene, when it first aired!!
It scared me senseless, and still remains in my memory of one of the scariest scenes shown on a series.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

I doubt many parents enjoyed watching a clown rape a teenage girl. I'd hate to have to discuss that with young children!

Like when Jonathan squeezed a guy so tightly around the belly that blood began seeping from his mouth.

That really happened? Gross - probably some serious internal injuries there.
The raping mime and BBQ baby battering ram were not appropriate for children.

it was the "As Long As We're Together" episode. Towards the end after Charles is beat up (yet again) and Jonathan goes to the Saloon where the two men works as bouncers. He starts a fight, squeezes the guy and then gets his job as a bouncer.

I think that the May We Make Them Proud Episode and the Sylvia Episode are two of the most disturbing Episodes on the show. These two Episodes should not have been made.

Indeed there was some mature stuff on "Little House". It confronted issues that would be shocking to deal with today.

The only memory I have of Little House is when Albert went missing.
