Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Godfather: Part II

    newyork84781 — 9 years ago(November 25, 2016 08:25 PM)

I know this has been discussed 1000 times on the Internet but I just don't get it?
What exactly was Fredo's role in everything? He swears he didn't know it wash hit. He tells Ola that they lied to him. Should we assume that part is the truth?
Was his job just opening the drapes? Did he let the hitmen onto the compound or tip them off on which way they could come inside and avoid his security? If that's the case then how could Fredo (as dumb as he is) think it would be anything but an assassination on his brother?
Regardless, how could Fredo (who fumbled a pistol while his father was being shot while picking out fruit) take out multiple hitmen so quickly and without being caught by all of Michael's guards?
The script states that the mens throats were slit. This would require even more precision than just shooting them. How could one man kill multiple people so quietly and quickly with a knife or blade? Especially nervous Fredo! Wouldn't it seem like he would need some good help?
I know they allude to it being Fredo since it was Fredo's wife who first discovers the bodies which could represent that they were close to Fredo's bedroom or wing of the estate. So perhaps they are also leading you to think that Fredo had his own crew of guys there who he ordered to kill the assassins. However, soldiers in a capo's crew do not follow orders from their captain to kill the BOSS. They are all under Don Michael and he is their leader. Fredo's men are
    Not independent from that.
Michael predicts that the men are probably already dead and the person "on the inside" is nervous because he botched it. But wouldn't that mean that it was a crew of people? He right away mentions Al and Rocco being businessmen and not family and limited in being trustworthy
Therefore. why does Rocco agree to that "suicide mission"? That's exactly what it was. The obvious question is "did Michael figure out that Rocco was also connected with the assassination attempt"? if yes, why is the audience not enlightened to how he finds out and what his role in the plot was? Why do we just watch one of Michaels top men agree to kill himself to get vengeance on Roth after Michael had already won the war??
Was this his way to redeem himself and allow him to die with honor and perhaps have his family taken care of the way Hagen offered to frank ? But why would he still all Rocco to sit in on these private and restricted meetings with his consigliere ? Wouldn't Rocco be left out? There is no clarification of this in the script. I've read it
Francis ford Coppola did write certain things that seemed improbable. In the script , he does write that the Rosato brothers attempting to kill pantangelli and getting interrupted by the cop was ALL PLANNED by Roth. The cop ( paid by Roth ) walking in at the exact time frank was being choked. Rosato saying "michAel corleone says hello" was all planned out to make frank think that mixhAel betrayed him but never intended for frankie to die , but actually wanted him to become a turncoat against corleone . Really??? You're a genius Francis.but cmon!!!! That's a lot to just accept as possible.
With that last statement in mind. Perhaps the Fredo/ dead assassins is just a plot hole or shabby writing in an otherwise complete masterpiece of a script and mega-masterpiece of a film?
Maybe one day Coppola will answer this question publicly or maybe someone will run into him somewhere.please ask that question!!
It shouldn't be something that is meant to keep the audience guessing like a David Lynch film or blade runner or the end of point blank. It shouldn't be a mystery as far as I see it
In fact , Coppola did give insight into a real mystery in one of his classic films "the conversation".
    SPOILER ALERT
He states how he "believed" that hidden bug was inside hackman's flute. He doesn't confirm it. He just says he believed that's where it was. Very clever.
    Any thoughts?

        I doubt that.
It's one of several things in the film that are not explained.
One of the very few criticims I have of The Godfather: Part II is that it does this too many times.
I would like there to have been more detail on the assassination attempt, how Fredo helped Ola and Roth and also the Cuban deal.
For the latter, I think the 'US Steel' scene provides enough detail for viewers to figure out the rest.

No they killed themselves because they were dead already for botching the job, and if they were caught they would be tortured and killed anyway.
          Occam’s razor.
          They killed themselves.

They are not Japs. They didn't kill themselves.
