I've seen both The Godfather, and Godfather Part II numerous times, and noticed that until Michael is discussing Roth's assassination with Tom, Neri, Rocco and Tom, we don't see him ACTUALLY eating anything. In this scene, he appears to be sucking on an orange that he's cut a hole into. There are scenes of him sitting down for a meal (The Wedding, The Hotel w/ Kay in GF, the dinner @ Lake Tahoe, the train en route to Washington in GF II), and it's obvious he has eaten or is in the process of eating, but none where we actually see him put food in his mouth (drinking, yes). Anybody else notice this?

The funny thing is while I was watching that scene it seemed like he was talking while shoving cake in, but it didn't sound garbled and I thought that was odd. Then I saw your thread.
Maybe he was just pretending to eat that cake and you are onto something!

No wonder he became diabetic! A cake-only diet sure isn't healthy.

What is Coppola's rep for retakes? If he typically did a lot of them it would be difficult for an actor to actually eat the food and make it through a day's shooting, as we can see in this classic TV commercial:

The actor who played Clemenza in GF I said Coppolla tried to kill him with retakes of him running up the stairs at the end of the movie.

In GODFATHER when Kay & Michael are seated at the wedding reception, I'm quite sure he takes a mouthful of whatever's on his plate. Can't remember if it's right before or after Fontane sings.

He does eat. At the beginning when Pentangeli is drunk and trying to talk to Michael about business during a family meal at night. I think.
