Just finished watching the entire series and was wondering if anyone knows why Velie calls Ellery "Maestro?"

It's just a nickname, like Jim on "Murphy Brown" calling Murphy "Slugger". It goes back to at least the 1940s when the stories were first being published. Given their respective ages, I'm guessing Velie looks on Ellery as a surrogate nephew.

If you look up the meaning of the word, it fits Ellery and his talent for solving crimes. virtuoso, master, expert, genius, wizard, prodigy.
How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

I have heard a bunch of the EQ radio plays, and I've read some of them as well. Velie calls Ellery "maestro" a lot in those radio plays. That's probably where the scriptwriters for this show got the idea.

I used to work at a law firm and I called one of our attorneys Maestro and he got used to that nickname pretty darn quick!
